CTC Welcomes Two More Youth Leaders, Max Mottola and Elsie Kamoni

Two nationally ranked chess enthusiasts, Max Mottola from NY and Elsie Kamoni in Nairobi, Kenya recently joined CTC and were appointed NY Chapter Leader of Global Outreach and Chess Ambassador in Africa. Their passion for the game and their dedication to helping challenged chess peers is what CTC is looking for in future leaders.

Max’s most noteworthy chess achievements include two-time National High School Team Champion. He is part of the pilot project that CTC will soon launch to meet the needs of African chess beginners. Elsie Kamoni, 9-years-old only, has been taking the podium at regional, national and international chess tournaments. Among her long list of impressive chess achievements, her moment of glory undoubtedly goes to the gold medal in the Africa Chess Championship, Under 7 Girls category, which delegated her to proudly carry Africa’s flag in the U8 Girls category at the 2022 World Schools Chess Championship held in Panama City. It was through this world championship that she and CTC Founder WIM Ellen Wang met and started the conversation of working together. Since CTC’s Global Outreach trip in March, Elsie has been volunteering at multiple chess activities organized by CTC, including the chess mini-camp in Ruiru and the chess instructions at Salama Gachie Primary School.

CTC wholeheartedly welcomes Max and Elsie! For their full bios, please check out here.

CTC Sponsors 30 Salama Players to Attend Kenya National Youth Chess Camp

30 Chess players within the Salama chess community, including current club members at the Salama Gachie Primary School and club alumni at nearby day or boarding secondary schools, attended the Kenya National Youth Chess Camp 2023, an initiative between Chess Kenya and Kenya Academy of Sports under the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Sports and the Art.

The camp was from Aug 14th (arrival) to 20th (departure) at Moi Girls Nairobi (girls) and Lenana School (boys). It offered free meals, accommodations, and transportation, but campers were expected to carry personal effects and bedding including blankets, which CTC was able to supply thanks to the donations it had received since the fundraiser in March.

Besides honing their chess skills and connecting with the rest of the Kenyan chess community, this camp was a lifetime memory for most Salama players – it was their very first boarding experience outside of the slum and their daily life struggle, through which friendships developed and tenacity was cultivated. In fact, Salama girl players networked with Sugoi Girls and Naitiri Girls Secondary Schools outside of Nairobi, both of which recently started their chess programs and are excited for the possible opportunities to study with CTC.
